Ham radio emergency communications at Cottonwood Park

The Richardson Wireless Klub to sponsor an emergency radio demonstration on June 22-23. Local citizens can observe portable amateur radio communications in action.

Richardson, TX, May 28, 2013 – The Richardson Wireless Klub will sponsor a demonstration of local emergency radio communications at the Pavilion in Cottonwood Park on June 22-23, Noon to Noon.

The Klub’s portable operation is part of a nationwide Field Day event sponsored by the American Radio Relay League (www.arrl.org). The event tests the capabilities of amateur radio operators to provide emergency communications services when electric power and all normal means of communications are down (including cell phone service) due to a natural disasters such as recently seen in Granbury, Texas and Moore, Oklahoma.

The Richardson Wireless Klub is one of hundreds of Special Service amateur radio clubs across America providing community services. Volunteers coordinate monthly emergency siren tests with the City of Richardson. Members also participate in the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES), and the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES).

Ham volunteers also provide communications support for the Richardson Christmas Parade, bike rallies, and other races and events sponsored by local charitable organizations.

The club is a non-profit 501c3 corporation and has served the Richardson area for more than fifty years.
The club holds monthly amateur radio meetings at 6:30 P.M. the second Monday of each month at St. Barnabas Presbyterian Church, 1220 W. Beltline Road, Richardson, TX. Meetings are open to anyone, of any age, who is interested in learning more about the many facets of amateur radio.
