CONCEPT: When the repeaters fail...
144/440 SIMPLEX communicationsin Region 2
NEEDS 20-25 watts (minimum), a decent antenna (at 20' +), and LMR 400 (flex) coaxial cable.
Last week, I was in conversation with Terry (N1VBS), and the subject drifted to the cost of mobile dual band (144/440 MHz) radios, and how some ARES members might not want to, or be in the position to spend $350 - $500 for a dedicated Go Box radio.
OPTION A:
His solution was that folks could use a
SLIDE MOUNT.
- One for the Car
- One for the Go Box
What a simple solution!
OPTION B:
Then, earlier this week, I was talking with Ned (KA1CVV - ex West Mountain Radio). We were talking about his new Baofeng UV-5R, its good points and feature that were lacking.
During that conversation, I brought up the
Slide Mount idea and mentioned that there might still be some hams who did not have a mobile radio to use and might not be financially able to buy one.
Suddenly, I had an inspiration!
Most hams ALREADY HAVE an HT.
Ned then suggested that instead of spending $350 - $500 on a mobile radio, folks could just buy a 25 watt
Amplifier (preferably 144/440 MHz) to use with their HT... and save money.

Mirage BD-35 @ $165 (among others)
