Topic: ARES BASICS - Nuts & Bolts

Session 2013-02
Topic: Data Communications – Part 1
Date: February 23
Time: 8:30 am – 11:30 am
Place: Guilford Fire Dept. (I-95, Exit 58)

Equipment Required:
(1) Laptop Computer (Windows)
(1) HT
(1) TNC
(1) HT to TNC Connecting cable
(1) TNC to Computer cable
(1) 25’ Extension Cord
(1) Power Strip

Summary:
“When All Else Fails” ARES Team members need to be Packet Radio savvy (and capable) in order provide back-up Data Communications to our served agencies.
This session (Part 1) will have 4 parts:
- Understanding the basic concepts of packet radio.
- Wiring your equipment together
- Setting-up your TNC connections.
- Operating: Sending and Receiving exercises

Additionally, we will have weekly On-The-Air sessions scheduled after the session in late February and throughout March to practice and build confidence with what we have learned.

Topic: Data Communications – Part 2

Time: 8:30 am – 12:30 am

Equipment Required:
(1) Laptop Computer (Windows)
(1) HT
(1) TNC
(1) HT to TNC Connecting cable
(1) TNC to Computer cable
(1) 25’ Extension Cord
(1) Power Strip

Summary:
Our February session (Part 1) was designed to be an easy introduction to the base level of Data Communications known as Packet Radio. This month, in the March session , we proceed to a higher level program for Data Communications (e.g. WinLink 2000). This session (Part 2) will have 4 parts:
- Introducing WinLink 2000 program and features
- Installing WinLink 2000 on your laptop
- Getting Winlink 2000 set-up and working on your equipment.
- Operating: Sending and Receiving

Additionally, we will have weekly Winlink 2000 Sessions scheduled following Part 2 to practice and build confidence with what we have learned.


Training Session 2013-04
Topic: “Go Box” Build Session
Date: April T.B.A.
Time: 8:30 am – 12:30 am
Place: T.B.A.

Summary:
We are planning a “Build Session” to construct “Go Boxes” that will meet the necessary criteria for portable operations in Region 2 (5 – 25 watts)
- This “Go Box” will use your 144/440 MHz dual band HT (and an amplifier) or Mobil radio as the foundation for the project.
- Project will require participating in a Group Purchase for materials/equipment.
- Cost is: T.B.A.
